How to choose scents for the home: expert advice


1. Look through the family album. The smell in the house should create a pleasant atmosphere, but at the same time be unobtrusive. As a rule, smells that give us pleasure are associated with strong positive emotions from childhood or adolescence. The fragrance, as if a photograph unexpectedly caught my eye, can return us to a state experienced many years ago. Try to remember what smell you associate with a feeling of absolute peace and happiness, and find its counterpart. For me, for example, this is the aroma of black currant in an aluminum mug. Even his first notes bring me back to a serene childhood spent at my grandfather's house.



2. Trust the first feeling. You come to the store, listen to the scent and realize that you want only him and no other - this is the perfect scenario. If you have a favorite perfume, it also simplifies the matter. Some manufacturers of perfumes duplicate them in the form of scents for the home. But remember: the fragrance for the house should not be pronounced and sharp, as, for example, in a fresh bouquet of lilac, which sometimes causes headaches. If no fragrance is immediately impressed, follow the advice number 3.

3. Prepare for purchase. Decide in advance with a group of flavors. Flower, spicy or sea? And only then go to the store and start exploring the assortment. Untrained nose after the third perfume ceases to perceive new odors. It is at this moment that many make a mistake. Choosing aromas for the house must be consciously. 4. Pick a special fragrance for the bedroom. A single scent can be used throughout the whole house, but for the bedroom it should be different. It all depends on your plans. My opinion is that each pair should have its own special flavor. That he will cause pleasant disturbing memories and desire. And if you want to relax and sleep, choose the aromas of chamomile or lavender.


5. Avoid disturbing scents. At home it is undesirable to use aromas with bright menthol and citrus notes. Such smells stimulate excessive activity. But they are useful for the office or gym - you will feel a noticeable surge of strength. In addition, citrus chords are better to choose without synthetic additives, otherwise this aroma will resemble household chemicals.


6. Take your favorite scent on the road - and the house will be where you are. On long trips, I always take with me a scented candle - the same one that stands at home. She reminds me of loved ones, gives calm and a feeling of home comfort. This was taught to me by a friend - a photographer from America, who spends a lot of time on business trips. I am pleased to share this secret with you! Now I will say an unexpected thing: not all aroma candles should be lit. In the process of burning the wick and melting the wax, the original flavor that you heard during the purchase is not only enhanced, but also distorted. This is especially true for smells with cherries in the heart of the composition - when burning, such a candle, in my opinion, gives a very unbalanced flavor. 

7. Do not forget about sachets and break stereotypes. Although the sachet is more a decor element than a home fragrance, since the aroma from dried herbs is unstable and only stands out when heated, pay attention to it. Lavender sachets are very popular in France. Europeans associate the smell of lavender with summer, with us - with an effective remedy for moths. Get rid of this stereotype! Bring a sack of lavender from vacation and place it in the living space - good mood, pleasant memories and a relaxed scent are provided.

9. Experiment with aroma oils. Aroma lamps allow you to instantly turn fragrance on and off. They should pour only natural aroma oils and in no case - synthetic (they cause a headache). You can try to mix your own oils and make your own fragrance for the house, but if you have no experience, do not rush to add the mixture to the aroma lamp. First, make sure that you and your household respond well to it. Do not forget about the therapeutic properties of aroma oils. For example, their ability to raise and lower pressure. For hypertension, jasmine, ylang-ylang, lavender, lemon, tangerine, lemon balm, nutmeg, rose, chamomile should be preferred. For hypotension - ginger, coriander, lemongrass, neroli, rosemary, eucalyptus.


10. Get rid of one smell with the help of another. If there is a smoking room in the house or you allow yourself to smoke indoors, then spray them with the scent of rose or black currant - mixing it with tobacco, the smell will become unusual, similar to an exquisite men's fragrance.
