Home fragrance: how to choose the right fragrance

Candles, diffusers, perfumed paper for the home - all this is certainly not a necessity, but it is these little things that create a special style and atmosphere. We offer to understand the varieties of perfumes for the home and at the same time choose a couple of actual aromatic items.

A bit of history ...

You definitely heard about how the first perfume compositions for premises were born (at that time, however, such a name was unthinkable). For the first time you could get acquainted with the subject of our discussion at the lessons of history when strict teachers in modest costumes talked about the magical and religious rites of ancient tribes and civilizations that burned various incenses during sacraments - backgammon, incense, camphor, sandalwood, myrrh, musk, amber .

In general, the history of flavoring rooms is very complicated and extremely wide in geography. Here are just a few examples from the past that will help broaden the concept of this ancient and pleasant home ritual.

So, aromatic candles first appeared in the Ancient East. Priests and priestesses used them for various rituals, and then began to use in everyday life. American women of the colonization era also contributed to the development of homemade scented candles, when they empirically found out that boiling some berries and fruits can produce wax, which not only burns well, but also smells nice.

Interestingly, even in the times of BC, there was a so-called perfume for clothes. The ancient Greeks hid various aromatic mixtures, which were mixtures of oils and powders, in stored fabrics.

The history of the appearance of diffusers is rooted in medieval Europe, when olive oil mixed with essential oils was poured into small vessels and placed inside a cane. Actually, since that time, there hasn’t been much change, except that the materials have become a bit more modern.

Another ancient way to fumigate the premises is Armenian paper. Its history began in the 19th century, when the French traveler Auguste Ponceau visited Armenia, which is a part of the Ottoman Empire, during a trip to the Ottoman Empire. He found that local residents burned benzoin to flavor the houses. Returning to France and enlisting the support of a pharmacist friend, Ponceau immediately started producing unusual paper, gaining unprecedented success in salons and boudoirs.

Today we are given the opportunity to choose from a variety of ways of flavoring a house from candles and chopsticks to special electronic dispensers.

How to choose a fragrance for the house

1. Aroma should not argue with the room. It is important to understand that the composition should emphasize, disclose and complement the interior, but not be opposed to it. Therefore, before buying a fragrance for the house, decide in which room it will “live” and whether the smell fits there in style.

2. The fragrance for the bedroom should be soft. And this is an extremely important rule. When choosing a fragrance for a bedroom, keep in mind that strong and bright aromas that look good in the living room can cause poor health and anxious sleep.

3.Avoid menthol and citrus notes. Or at least be more careful with them. Such smells stimulate excessive activity and, if this is not your goal, then it is better to replace them with calmer notes of white flowers, lavender, warm spices.

4. Do not buy cheap flavors. Good songs can not cost a penny. Candles bought in the supermarket, most likely, will burn well, but you will not get the aroma. But different diffusers, on the contrary, are more likely to emit too strong a chemical smell.

What format of flavoring to choose

Diffusers - a set of a vessel with an aromatic liquid and several long wooden sticks, which are inserted into the container. This format is suitable for large rooms, such as living rooms and a hall. The aroma spreads smoothly and the degree of concentration can be adjusted by using the number of sticks, which are impregnated with the aroma liquid and give the same smell.

Sachets are a small bag filled with fragrant herbs and spices. Such things spread an extremely delicate and soft smell, so they, as a rule, are put in boxes with clothes or behind pillows of sofas and beds.

Armenian paper - paper strips impregnated with essential oils. When burned, they exude a delicate pleasant aroma. Half a decay board to aromatize the air and absorb foreign odors in the room.

Candles - the most common format of all presented, they are suitable for use in both large and small rooms. Their competitive advantage is a persistent and diverse aroma. Candles perfume compositions are often not inferior to good perfumes, moreover, they are often repeated. In addition, scented candles do not rarely act as a self-sufficient decorative element, which is not ashamed to put on display.

Perfumed paper, unlike the previous version, does not need to be ignited. It is placed in drawers, suitcases and cabinets to eliminate the unpleasant smell in a small confined space. The principle of operation is similar to that of the sachet, but still it is worth noting that in this case we are talking about more delicate work.

Dried flowers are another way to give the room a pleasant aroma. Compositions of dried flowers taken to steal in open vases and put on the shelves of shelving. Suitable for flavoring any premises except kitchens and bathrooms, as they can absorb foreign odors. The main disadvantage is a short lifetime, because even the most beautiful and fragrant lavender will lose its charm in a couple of weeks.

Sprays and perfumes - the easiest and fastest way to give a pleasant aroma to the room. Among the advantages - speed, persistent aroma, the ability to control the intensity of the fragrance. Suitable absolutely for any premises.

Aroma lamps warm the essential oil, which under the influence of temperature begins to evaporate, releasing aromatic substances. The lamp works by the following principle: water is poured into the container, into which the essential oil is dropped. Under this capacity is a candle, which heats the aromatic composition. It is best to use aroma lamps in spacious rooms.

Using

Like perfumes, home fragrances take time to unfold. Therefore, do not expect instant transformation of the room immediately after lighting a candle or spraying perfume. It will be possible to fully experience all the charm of the aroma only after 20-30 minutes, when the composition truly takes over the space. Consider this moment when you decide to renew the smell of the room before the arrival of the guests.

What flavor to choose now

As we wrote above, your chosen fragrance should not argue with the interior and the overall style of the room. However, despite this, there are certain clichés in the world of homemade perfumery that make it easier to navigate by flavor and speed up the selection process. So, one of them is the orientation for the current season. In winter, as it is easy to guess, you should pay attention to the spicy and coniferous aromas.
